Powerlink Case Study Images

Situation

  • Powerlink is a leading Australian Government owned provider of high voltage electricity transmission network services, combining innovation with insight to deliver safe, cost effective and reliable solutions.
  • Powerlink would like to provide relevant users with the required Thermal and Fault Level (TFL) ratings data in an easily accessible, meaningful and timely manner with a high degree of accuracy. This is critical to ensure the Network is operating at optimum capacity.
  • Managing the TFL ratings were difficult and time consuming because;
    • of the inconsistent use of various IT systems and supporting documents to capture and calculate the ratings
    • no guidelines or urgency to update the ratings regularly, timelines/deadlines were not the same for everyone
    • there was no single source of truth and
    • the business could not trust the data quality of the ratings leading to over-designed components i.e.
      increased manufacturing costs or under-designed components leading to network failure.

Work Performed By Our Team

  • Interviewed key Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to scope the process
  • Performed a stakeholders’ analysis
  • Workshopped the process with stakeholders and documented the
    As-Is end-to-end process
  • Identified and prioritised the improvement opportunities
  • Developed, reviewed, updated and signed off the To-Be improved
    end-to-end Rating Management process.
  • The process captured the roles and responsibilities; systems used, business rules driving the process as well as supporting documents which were or should have been used.

Value For Client

  • Reduction in cost and frustration levels within the organisation (particularly during project implementation) as a result of;
    • Reducing the rating release time cycle from 8 weeks to near real-time displayed on SAP
    • Better management of delays within the process
    • Eliminating bottlenecks that could be identified earlier in the process
    • Improving the quality of the TFL ratings data, which restored the credibility of the data and
    • Eliminating rework
  • Business has a clear understanding now of which systems/data sources are supporting which part of the process for change management and future IT projects
  • Safety improved, since Managers can now make better informed decisions about their limited resources and easily share explicit and tacit knowledge about their process (knowledge handover/retention)
