Focused Change for Survival
|
|
by Lida du
Plessis
At the end of last year, against the backdrop of an emergent
worldwide economic crisis, an article by my colleague Alastair
Brooke in this newsletter described 2009 as The Year of Process
Management'. Alastair made a compelling case that successful organisations
will have, or will actively develop, a process management
capability. In this paper I'd like to illustrate, by way of a
fictive case study, how process thinking can assist organisations
to harness what Alastair referred to as the biggest opportunity for
change in over a decade.
What should an organisation do in the current economic environment?
That change is needed to weather the storm is clear. If your
customers are experiencing change and your suppliers are under
pressure and everything else around you is changing, you better
believe that you also need to change. Indeed you will change
whether you want to or not; better that you be in control of that
change. That this change will need to happen with very limited
resources, is also a reality. The phrase do more with less now has
an edge of brutal reality.
Organisations therefore need to identify the areas of change on
which to confidently focus their limited resources. Each
organisation needs to carefully design its own stimulus package.
How can limited, and perhaps diminishing, resources be invested to
gain the best return? What needs to change to enable survival? What
changes are mandatory rather than just desirable? How can these
mission critical changes be effected?

Leonardo Team Members blog about life in a Process
World
|
|
In this
Global Economy Crisis employing Business Process Management ideals
in combination with Services-Oriented Architecture to do process
execution is the most logical step. We call this building composite
applications. Why would you spend money in both setting up this
Architecture and using technologies that allow process execution to
help you? Because it gives clear focus to how we might optimise,
shed and save.
